LEGO DigiComp II

A LEGO version of an old “marble logic” computer called Digi-Comp II. I set out to rebuild it from LEGO, using various tidbits and plans from the internet. More pictures of the components can be found in my Brickshelf gallery here: www.brickshelf.com I tried to recreate the original DGII design, but did make a few modifications, such as changing the “clear” switch to “clear once” style operation, & not bothering with the “auto/manual” switch (defaults to automatic) or neatly routing all the outputs back to a single collection tray (in particular, the “M/Q underflow”). It works amazingly well, and I think could be modified to essentially release four balls closely spaced in multiple mode. I owe a debt of gratitude to the “Friends of Digi-comp” Yahoo group for advice & documentation, & to ESR & John Godfrey for making such an ingenious mechanical computer in the first place. The finished model weighs about 10 pounds, & uses 14 simple switches, 21 flip-flops, 8 half flip-flops, and a ball release mechanism. I’m currently building a slightly improved copy at the request of a museum, for public display.

Building Art Out of Legos

From voaspecialenglish.com | http Legos are not just for children. They can become works of art in the hands of adults like Nathan Sawaya. NATHAN SAWAYA: I dont notice the time passing. I just, this is what I do and I enjoy it. So I can just work for hours without being interrupted. Legos are made of plastic. Each piece is called a brick. Bricks come in different colors and sizes. NATHAN SAWAYA:I think the most important thing is having a vision in my head before I start putting down that first brick. And then it is just a matter of putting the bricks together to make it look like the vision I have. Sawaya is one of a very few full-time Lego artists in the United States. He creates works of art from these simple building blocks. NATHAN SAWAYA: “Although I work probably every weekend and I work most nights, you know, Im doing what I love so it doesnt feel like work.” For several years, Sawaya worked as a lawyer. That left him little time for building Legos. But he found enough time to set up a personal website. NATHAN SAWAYA: “There was a day when my website, brickartist.com, it crashed because it had too many hits. So I realized, all right, it is time to make a change because there was a viable market out there to be an artist.” Sawaya says he has no regrets about his new career. NATHAN SAWAYA: “The worst day as an artist is still better than the best day as a lawyer. So I dont regret my decision.” His art works have found their way into American museums. This show was

Tips For Storing Melissa and Doug Wooden Toys & Legos Building Blocks

Ever stepped on a Lego barefoot in the dark? if you have (and you didn’t immediately consign the whole minefield of such crippling objects to the nearest available garage sale), you are probably eagerly searching for appropriate storage containers and ideas. Those wooden building blocks, dollhouse accessories, and Hotwheels cars aren’t much better to encounter on a dark night, and need a bedtime home as well.

The good news is there are many options, suitable for every dcor and lifestyle. from empty packing boxes to lined wicker, from a washed ice cream bucket to color coded stacking drawers, there is something that will meet every family’s needs.

For those who wish to be boldly creative and independent, there are a variety of make-at-home options. first, the old stand-bys, shoe boxes and washed plastic food containers such as ice cream buckets or margarine tubs. Simply wash and rinse well. allow to dry, then turn them upside down on a piece of newspaper and spray paint them and their lids a nice color.

Next, be sure to label them, container and lid alike with the contents, such as Lego Blocks, Large or Melissa and Doug Wooden Toys or Necklace Beads. The kids will enjoy helping out, perhaps even using up some of those beads which get so easily scattered by gluing them on as decoration. a tip from experienced moms is that for a really successful container system, you should also label the shelves where the containers go. This way, clean up for the kids is as easy as a matching game.

For those who wish they had time for all that, but must purchase something instead, the options range from stackable plastic storage drawers from Wal-Mart to designer wicker baskets from specialty outlets. These really add an artistic touch and are very convenient, even for toys that have a lot of smaller pieces like Melissa and Doug wooden toys. The key is to have each container lined to keep the small pieces from falling into the wicker.

Another great idea is a system of sturdy hanging pegs mounted at child-height. Toys then get stored in tote bags or drawstring bags and hung neatly on the pegs each evening. Some moms have successfully used over-the door shoe bags. The individual pockets are just the right size for hot wheels cars or wooden building blocks like Discovery Toys blocks or Melissa and Doug wooden toys.

All of the above are great ideas, but my personal two favorites are the Box4BLOX and the Drop Bag. The Box4BLOX is a unique item. it is specially designed to keep different size Legos sorted and organized. There are four stackable trays with open grids in the bottom, which actually filter the Legos through based on size. The bottom layer holds the tiny pieces which otherwise get lost so easily, and there is a lid to close the top.

Best of all, not only are the Legos easily contained in this neat and tidy box, but when the child goes to play with them, he does not tend to dump the building blocks all over the floor to find what he needs. he doesn’t have to. The pieces are ready-sorted for him. he now gets to spend more time in building and less in hunting for the right piece.

The Drop Bag is another ingenious idea from one smart mommy. This is something you can make yourself in just an hour or two. You’ll need a large circle of cloth, 44 inches or 60 inches in diameter and a piece of rope six inches longer than the circumference of the fabric.

Sew a casing into the perimeter of your fabric circle. run the rope through inside the casing and tie the ends together. Spread the fabric out on the floor and instruct the child to stay on the fabric when she plays with her Melissa and Doug wooden toys or Legos building blocks. when she’s through, it’s a snap to lift the edges, pull the rope to close it into a drawstring bag and hang the bag on a peg.

Wooden Building Blocks – A Fun Learning Toy

Children simply love wooden building blocks. the simplicity of the toy is it’s main attraction and captivates young minds. the important part is that these toys provide an important contribution to the child’s learning and development. Wooden toys, when properly designed and manufactured, have long served as important learning tools for children to experiment, through play, with their world.

Life skills such as reasoning, critical thinking and eye-hand coordination are all exercised through play with wooden building blocks. many children develop social skills through sharing with one another and by explaining their creations with others. the excitement is always fun to watch as it not only affords an opportunity for children to express themselves but it also gives an insight into their unbridled imagination. Children soon learn geometric relationships, what will work and what won’t, and then they use their imagination to create marvelous structures. It’s all fun and much more importantly it’s all learning. Wooden toys by their very nature are durable and safe for children. the one issue to watch out for is that they are not so small as to present a choking hazard for the child. Most wooden toys are made large enough to be safe for even infants but choking hazards always have to be evaluated by parents. Wooden building blocks and other wooden toys have several other advantages over their plastic and metal counterparts. Wood, by its very nature is a renewable resource, thus the only green choice – especially if the wood is from a responsible managed forest. After years of hard play, wooden toys might get dented a little, but they will continue to serve as a source of entertainment and learning for even generations. In contrast, plastic toys usually fail by actually breaking and presenting sharp, dangerous edges that are obviously unsafe and render the toy useless. In addition to being almost always painted, metal toys can be bent and often get scratched and then rusted, again making them unsuitable as a play thing.

The type or species of wood and finish are worth mentioning as points of consideration. Hundreds of years of experience indicate that wooden building blocks and wooden toys are best when made from a dense, tight grained hardwood. These qualities not only enable the toy to take years of hard play but also have been shown to not splinter or warp. Species such as rock maple, bass wood, sugar maple, and beech have long been the preferred choice for wooden toy makers. Unfinished wooden educational toys are the best and safest choice for finish; however in the case of alphabet blocks and such, paint or dye is an important feature. when selecting painted wooden building blocks the manufacturing source and type of coloration should be checked carefully prior to purchase.

4 Stages of Playing With Building Block Toys

An infant or toddler’s brain is constantly growing and expanding. For this reason, the early years of child development are the best time for parents to provide their kids with helpful aids to stimulate and facilitate mental development. so what is a parent to do?

Infants and toddlers learn primarily from hands-on activities, exploring and playing. They are not quite ready for reading books or surfing the Internet, but it won’t be long before they get to that so enjoy this phase while it lasts Parents can spend a lot of money on fancy electronic toys and battery-powered gadgets but they will have a hard time finding anything more effective than one of the simplest, oldest and lowest cost toys available, building blocks.

Building blocks toys will do as much and possibly more than any other toy to encourage a child’s growth and development. more than other toys blocks engage children in what psychologists call creative play. Blocks do not specify the story of playtime, so a child can create whatever he or she imagines. Creative play helps a child develop socially, emotionally, and physically – all skills that will benefit a child later in life.

As babies, wood building blocks help develop a child’s sensory skills by encouraging sight, touch, and sound. The bright colors encourage infants to grasp the blocks, and multiple colors help the child to learn to distinguish between two objects. therefore it is important for blocks to be colorful, easy to grasp, and smooth-edged (to avoid hurting the child). As they grow, infants and toddlers will taste everything. therefore it is important that the building blocks be non-toxic and durable. Overall the children will be learning about sizes, shapes, colors, numbers, patterns, length, and weight, all supporting their cognitive development.

When toddlers grasp the toys, they will also be developing their motor skills and hand-eye coordination. As they grow older, they will begin attempting to stack and balance blocks, which will further encourage both their fine motor skills and gross motor skills. Carrying the blocks will develop the child’s small muscles, improving their physical development.

When children join their peers in a game with blocks toys, they will also be developing their social and emotional skills. They will be negotiating for the items that they want and exchanging ideas with other children. when the children’s viewpoints differ, they will be expanding their knowledge and learning to respect viewpoints other than their own.

When adults show genuine interest, children are often eager to tell others about their creation. They will develop their language skills as the adults help them find accurate words to describe their imagination, and might even develop writing skills by creating signs for their buildings.

These are only a few of the benefits of building blocks toys for children. The blocks can also help a child develop logical, musical, or even mathematical skills. Simple wooden blocks or other wood toys offer an infinite number of uses in a child’s play area

    Lego Star Wars Sets

There are literally dozens of Lego Star Wars sets to choose from which are mostly quite simple to build and when you’ve finished you have a great toy to play with from Starfighters to battle scenarios and army packs to turbo tanks. Combine Lego Star Wars sets and invite your friends round to fight for the Galaxy.

Imperial V-wing Starfighter 7915: At the end of the Clone Wars, when the Galactic Republic fell, the V-wing Starfighter was one of the first of the new Empire. once built, this model has a cockpit which opens and closes and into which the Imperial pilot fits, even with his blaster in his hand, and wings which rotate ninety degrees. You also get an Astromech Droid R2-Q2 figure. now you can go hunting the Rebel Alliance.

Rebel Trooper Battle Pack: In this set you get an ice-cutting Rebel combat speeder vehicle complete with flick-firing missiles. The characters included are Rebel pilot Zev Sensca and three Rebel Troopers wearing cold weather clothing and Hoth helmets and they’ll help you defend the hidden Rebel base on ice planet Hoth against the attack of the Empire.

Millennium Falcon: Millennium Falcon is probably the biggest of the Lego Star Wars sets and will keep your 9 to 14 year old (or possible his father) happy for hours just building it. it has in excess of 1200 pieces and is a replica of Han Solo’s starship. Detailed building instructions are included which makes construction relatively easy but considerable discipline is needed when laying out the pieces as they are predominantly grey.

The top panels open so that you can see into the ship, the cockpit cover is detachable so that Han Solo and Chewbacca can pilot the ship and the hull opens. The weaponry is impressive with twin flick missiles and rotating laser cannons on the ship plus a crossbow, three blasters and three lightsabers for use by the six mini figures of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo and Chewbacca which are all in the set.

There are no mini-figures of C-3PO or R2D2 included, but they are available separately along with lots of other mini figures so you can build up the full set of major characters.

With these Lego Star Wars sets the sky’s the limit in terms of re-enacting scenes from the movies and creating your own scenarios is limited only by your own imagination.

    Chemistry Sets and Science Kits

Chemistry sets always go down well with kids. things in chemistry sets fizz and change color and explode, all of the things children like. Plus, chemistry sets do a great job of teaching children the scientific method, probably more so than other science kits. A huge amount of emphasis is put on the scientific method, and children will either learn, review or apply it in every single science class they ever take. so, chemistry sets are fun, hold children’s interest, and will help them get a head start on the most important aspect of science.

Some of the sets on offer are some of the highest quality children’s chemistry sets available. there are also some more affordable sets and even some where children can create edible goodies as part of the process.

One delicious chemistry set is Ice Cream Science by Scientific Explorer. this kit allows children to create their own delicious ice cream by mixing ingredients in a t-shirt. it also explains the chemical reactions that take place during the ice cream making process. Kids will be amazed at some of the ingredients that go in to their favorite treat, such as salt. they can make a variety of flavors and colors of ice cream, and of course everything made is safe and edible. there is no better way to bribe a kid into learning than with ice cream.

Also for the Scientific Explorer is the Soda Pop Science Kit. this kit allows kids to make their very own sodas. this is one of the most popular kits available, and it has won both the Family Fun Toys of the Year Award and the Oppenhiem Platinum Award. The color, flavor and even amount of fizz of the soda can be controlled with this amazing kit. an information booklet helps kids learn about things like where the carbonation in soda comes from, how cola is made, and even how soda companies conduct market research.

For kids that are serious about science there is the mac daddy of chemistry sets – the Chem C3000 Chemistry Science Kit. this kit can be used to perform over 360 amazing experiments and is sure to hold a little scientist’s interest for a very long time. Some of the great experiments include making invisible ink, a soap-powered boat and even a miniature fire extinguisher. The kit includes all safety materials like safety goggles, but younger children should certainly only use with adult supervision because this is a serious chemistry set. this can be used to prepare for high school or even college level chemistry classes. all of the equipment is professional-grade and the included instructions make every experiment easy to follow.

A more affordable version of the C3000 is the C2000 Chemistry Science Kit. it contains many of the same experiments from the C2000 and is just a slightly less complete kit at an affordable price. Safety glasses are still included, it still makes a great introduction to high school or college level chemistry classes, still used professional-grade equipment and is still packaged with easy to follow instructions. it simply leaves out some of the experiments from the C3000.

All of these chemistry sets are sure to nurture a child’s interest in science. Some of them are slightly more serious, but they all include great information on chemistry that is easily relatable to children.

Lego Star Wars Figures – Who Are They?

The Lego Star Wars figures included in the games will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen the movies or TV shows.

Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Obi Wan Kenobi are all included with the Millennium Falcon set but can all be bought separately along with many others.

Darth Vader: Darth Vader is one of the main characters in the Star Wars Saga and was depicted as being on the dark side of the Force until the very last movie when he sacrificed himself to save Luke. he was born Anakin Skywalker and is the father of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa.

The Lego figure has an evil face, a detailed body with a cape and removable helmet as well as the inevitable red lightsaber.

Luke Skywalker: Luke Skywalker is the son of Darth Vader and legendary Jedi who helped vanquish the Galactic Empire in the Galactic Civil War.

The Lego version is one inch high with flesh coloured hands and head and a black Jedi outfit. his weapon is a trangreen lightsaber.

Princess Leia Organa: One of the main protagonists in the original trilogy, Princess Leia is discovered to be Luke Skywalker’s twin sister and graduates to Princess of Alderaan and a member of the Imperial Senate in the fourth movie.

There are two Lego Star Wars figures of Princess Leia available; one dressed in a white suit with brown hair and her own blaster, the other is the slave Leia with pale flesh and a metal bikini

Han Solo: This character was actually a human who was born in Corellia and became famous in the Galaxy as a member of the Rebel Alliance.

Again there are two different Lego figures of Han Solo; one wearing brown trousers and one wearing blue. Both have a blaster.

Chewbacca: This legendary character was a wise and loyal Wookiee and co-piloted Han Solo’s ship. he was very technologically astute and an expert mechanic.

The Chewbacca figure comes with a crossbow.

Obi Wan Kenobi: This character first appears as an mysterious hermit called Ben Kenobi but turns out to be an exiled Jedi knight.

Lego offer three different Obi Wan Kenobis, the only differences being the shade of yellow/green of his outfit and that one comes with a silver lightsaber.

Other Lego Star Wars figures available are an Imperial Royal guard with Force pike, C-3PO, a scout trooper, Yoda, Ahsoka, Boba Fett, Paploo, Count Dooku, R2-D2, Mace Windu, General Grievous, Admiral Akbar, a Bomb Squad trooper, a snow trooper, Chancellor Palpatine, Senator Onaconda Farr a battle droid and various different Clone troopers so there are loads to collect.

Lego’s Star Wars – The Video Games

The movies and TV series were addictive for adults and kids alike and the same goes for Lego’s Star Wars video games. If you’re looking for a stunning gift this holiday season, then look no further.

Lego’s Star Wars III – The Clone Wars is the latest release (perhaps bar one) and can be used on Nintendo Wii, DS and 3DS, Sony PSP, Xbox360 and PC platforms.

Lego’s Star Wars Clone Wars includes 20 missions based on familiar stories, humour and characters with 40 bonus levels covering the whole age of the Clone Wars.

The Force can be used to control all sorts of Lego characters and objects. Solve puzzles, send your enemies flying and create weapons. Assume command of clone troopers fighting the droid army, just like a real army commander, using and deploying the equipment and forces at your disposal. Your new armaments include capital ships, rocket launchers and rapid fire guns.

New features include the control of more than one team in different locations, the fighting of the huge bosses such as Gor, The Zillo Beast and others.

Players will be able to navigate their favourite space ships in multi layered combat through the whole galaxy.

Combat will be fiercer with greater freedom of character movement and lightsaber abilities as well as new grappling abilities to help defeat the enemies.

Exploration of the galaxy becomes more exciting with a variety of exotic locations and ships and players can assume different characters as they play.

New vehicles available in this version of Lego’s Clone Wars are the Republic gunship, Clone Turbo Tank and Anakin’s Jedi Intercepter and players will come across their favourite characters as they play, meeting Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca amongst others.

There is new lighting and animation as well as new puzzles but the highlight is probably the enhanced split screen for playing with friends and family who can jump in and out as they wish.

If you really want to be a favourite with your family this holiday season you could buy the entire Video Game Collection of Lego’s Star Wars which will enable them to play all six of the movies in one video game or you could get Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels which allows players to re-enact duels with characters of their choice. Interactive surroundings help to vanquish the enemy, re-arrange the architecture and generally have lots of fun.

Nearly everyone under 50 has played with these building blocks of imagination. There is no telling how many engineers and scientists were spawned by these plastic building blocks.

Lego is synonymous with plastic toy bricks that can be easily transformed into buildings, space ships, cars, boats, trains and a myriad of other toys. the key is that the child gets to assemble the toy from the basic building blocks. Each toy can be assembled, disassembled and reassembled in enough new shapes and forms to tickle the imagination and stretch the youngster’s creativity.

Today, Lego is much more that the simple blocks invented in 1949. It is toys, theme parks, movies, and CDs. Lego building blocks and other products are distributed around the world. These tiny plastic bricks and the company they have built, are a phenomenon with a success as remarkable as Mickey Mouse.

Lego Bricks Become the Building Blocks of Fantasy

Where did Lego come from and how did it get to be such an important tool for childhood creativity?

Our story begins in Billund, Denmark. It is 1932. Master carpenter and joiner Ole Kirk Kristiansen opened a new business. His little company makes stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys. He has just six employees. Nobody could have imagined, but Lego and the little building blocks of imagination had just been born.

Two years later, Kristiansen adopted the name Lego as a brand name for his toys. the name is derived from the Danish words leg godt, which mean play well. Ironically, he later discovered that Lego in Latin means I put together. Lego has truly come to mean put together and play well in virtually every language. At this time, all of the company’s toys were being made from wood.

In 1942, the Lego factory burned to the ground. Kristiansen rebuilt.

In 1947, the Lego Company became the first company in Denmark to buy an injection-molding machine. It began making plastic toy dolls and other toys. the famous bricks were yet to be invented.

It was not until 1949 that the Lego company introduced the Automatic Binding Brick, a little plastic brick, some with four studs and some with eight. At this time, the company was producing about 200 different plastic toys. the Automatic Binding Brick was sold exclusively in Denmark.

In 1954, Godtfred Kirk made a trip to England to meet with a purchasing agent. the purchasing agent told Kristiansen that he thought the Automatic Binding Bricks lacked an idea and system. Godtfred returned to Denmark. the Lego system was developed.
The following year, Godtfred introduced the Lego system at a toy fair in Germany. It was the first time it was introduced outside of Denmark. the results were disappointing. Kristiansen did not give up. Later that year, the Lego system Play was developed. It was an improved system for the Lego bricks. the Lego system Play was exported to Sweden, where it sold well.

In 1959, Lego bricks and the Lego system were introduced in Great Britain, France, and Belgium.

It wasn’t until 1961 that Lego bricks were first marketed in the U.S. and Canada. they were an immediate hit and distribution around the world continued. By the end of that decade, 843 people in Billund worked for the Lego company. the first Legoland film was produced. In 1969, the DUPLO system for children under age five was introduced.

In 1980, the Educational Products Department was established. the DUPLO Rabbit logo was introduced and a survey showed that 70 percent of all Western European families with children under age 14 had Lego in their home.

As 1990 unfolded, the Lego Group had become one of the world’s 10 largest toy manufacturers and the only toy company of that size in Europe. the others were in Japan and the U.S. More than one million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park and Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen celebrated his 70th birthday. Lego Publishing was renamed Lego Licensing and the LEGOLAND Band issued an LP.

With the beginning of the new century, LEGO continues to grow. It has also continued to remain a family owned company. These days, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the grandson of Ole Kirk, runs the company.

In 2003, a record 1.63 million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park in Billund. the Lego mini-figure celebrated its 25th birthday and the BIONICLE film Mask of Light was released to great success. Representations of the Lego mini-figures Biff Starling and Sandy Moondust are the first earthlings to reach the planet Mars onboard the NASA Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. the Lego Education Center in Shanghai opened. the concept was aimed at children from age three to age twelve. There are more than 80 Lego Education Centers in Korea alone. http://www.lego.com receives around four million visitors per month.

Lego bricks are more than just building blocks. they are learning toys. they build on favorite themes and children’s stories and allow the child to exercise his or her own imagination and creativity. Offshoots of the basic brick include such toys as Lego Robotics, Star Wars Lego, Harry Potter Legos and many other building toys and kids’ games. It is truly amazing what a few bricks and a full measure of imagination will produce.
